                          Squeaker News        10th August 2008

We have sent so many apologies of late, and regret having to send another - this time because of disc corruption, including our email address book. Would all our regular readers please send an email to jph.langrish@virgin.net, so that we may build a new one.

  Village "30"

We are progressing steadily through the stages to enable us to get a 30 mph speed limit through the village, both on the A272 and the C28.  In order to qualify, the present average speed on these roads MUST BE LESS than 45 mph.  Last time we were tested the average speed was 46 mph - too high.  In the next few days, 3 infra-red cameras will be placed in the village. One on Langrish Hill; one on the sweeping bend on the A272 near the junctions of the C28 with it and one on the C28 near Hanger View Cottage.  Obviously, the slower we all go past these cameras the slower the average speed will be. These are boxes at the side of the road and not wires across the road so they will not be very obvious, so we need to watch out for them.

The concert which Louisa Denby, with her colleagues from Bedales music Department, kindly arranged for us was a great success, and much enjoyed as a fresh experience for the Friends, and particulary as a chance to hear "live" music in the village.

Marjorie Day's  "Langrish Walk" was also much appreciated and enjoyed, and we hope that this may become an annaual event.

           PARISH COUNCIL & COMMUNITY NEWS

The Parish Council now meets every two months. All meetings, which are held at Langrish House Hotel are open to the Public. The agenda for every meeting is posted on the notice-boards on Langrish and Ramsden Village Greens a week before the next meeting.

The Parish Council met on 14th January 2008. Progress with Langrish Meadow and traffic issues again dominated the discussions.

The Parish Council is very pleased to announce that we have just been given over £8,000, released by EHDC from its Developer Contributions, to start work on levelling the ground of Langrish Meadow. It is unlikely that this will begin until the weather is better as a lot of earth has to be moved. A further grant of £3,000 from HCC via our County Counsellor, Sam Payne’s Members Devolved Budget may also be available for ongoing work after the site has been prepared.

Noticeboards

We should like to thank John Harris very much indeed for the splendid new noticeboards that he has made for the Parish, one at Langrish and one at Ramsdean - both much admired..

The Parish Council would like to remind everyone that as well as being the first (i.e. lowest) tier of government, it is your immediate and direct contact for concerns and enquiries. It urges you to bring matters of public interest to its notice, so that they may be channelled upward to the higher levels of government. It would be a tragedy if this important role, that has existed since Anglo-Saxon times, were lost. It is certainly under threat with the establishment of Regional Assemblies, which have already taken place

 From the Registers

The Parish Church, a Grade II Victorian building, designed by Ewan Christian, lies on the south side of the A272 at the western end of the village. It is a simple building, with nave, north aisle and chancel, and contains some interesting Victorian stained glass and monuments to local people.

The church is open for private prayer during daylight hours, and is accessible to a wheel-chair user. Wheelchair users wishing to visit the church may find it more convenient to park at the village green (on the East Meon road) and use the footpath to the church (about 100 metres).

Sunday worship takes place on the following days in the month:

1st Sunday        9.00 a.m. Parish Eucharist (Order One)

2nd Sunday       9.00 a.m. Parish Eucharist (Order One)

 3rd Sunday        10.45 a.m. Family Service

4th Sunday        9.00 a.m. Parish Eucharist (Order One)

Times of 5th Sunday services vary, but are posted on the board at the lych-gate.

There is a short service of prayer every Friday at 9.30 a.m.

Enquiries about baptisms, banns of marriage and weddings should me made to the Vicar, Canon Terry Louden, at

terrylouden@btinternet.com

The church is supported by the Langrish and Ramsdean Friends,  who meet for social and community interests.

An Annual Fete is organised each summer.

The church and its small regular congregation wish to serve the village community. Members of other Christian traditions are welcome at Sunday worship. There is a long-term plan to adapt part of the interior of the building to form a meeting-room, with toilet and kitchenette.

The church is linked with the Good Shepherd Anglican Church, Jameso Nkwanta, in the Diocese of Cape Coast, in Ghana. The Vicar was a member of a local group of Christians who visited Ghana in 2003.
